I really, really liked the fact that

Strength 2

It did not feel preachy, like many other books that attempt to discuss spirituality. It approached the subject with a sense of humility and a genuine curiosity about the intersection of faith, art, and culture - and how individuals experience this intersection, and how they can channel this convergence into their own lives.

I was of the belief that the main character’s flat, monotone, almost 2D form of narration was a stylistic choice. But, after listening to the [Literary Ramblings](insert link here)

Production: faceage.bwh.harvard.edu

Designed and built a full-stack clinical research web application enabling IRB-approved studies to collect facial photographs from participants and estimate biological age using the FAHR-Face deep learning model. The system is deployed in production at MGB under two IRB protocols (healthy volunteer and MGB patient arms).

Key responsibilities and technical contributions:

Full-stack development using Python/Flask (Gunicorn, 5 gevent workers), with Jinja2 templating, Bootstrap front-end, and SQLAlchemy/SQLite for authentication data

Deep learning inference pipeline: deployed FAHR-Face — a 12-layer Vision Transformer (ViT) with a linear regression head on the [CLS] token, operating on 112×112 aligned face crops; weights loaded at runtime from a volume-mounted checkpoint; RetinaFace used for face detection and alignment; per-session median age computed across multiple images and age delta calculated against chronological DOB; results returned to participants asynchronously by email

Asynchronous task architecture: designed a Redis Queue (RQ) system with a scheduler container polling REDCap every 60 seconds, enqueuing face-age jobs picked up by a dedicated worker container

Third-party integrations: REDCap API (participant records, questionnaire data, results), Dropbox API (photo storage and file request links), MGB internal SMTP relay (automated transactional emails)

Authentication and security: implemented full participant auth flow (bcrypt, token-based account activation, password reset, session management, account lockout); added CSRF protection (Flask-WTF), security headers (Flask-Talisman/HSTS), and Redis distributed locking to prevent race conditions on concurrent registrations

Containerised deployment: orchestrated 5-container Docker Compose stack (nginx reverse proxy with SSL termination, Flask app, RQ worker, RQ scheduler, Redis); cross-platform multi-arch builds (
docker buildx
) for Apple Silicon → amd64 Linux server

E-consent and data capture: built a multi-step participant flow covering study-arm selection, electronic consent with PDF generation, baseline and daily questionnaires, and photo upload (file or webcam)

Tech stack: Python · Flask · Gunicorn · SQLAlchemy · Redis · RQ · Docker · nginx · PyTorch · HuggingFace Transformers (ViT) · RetinaFace · REDCap API · Dropbox API · SQLite · Flask-WTF · Flask-Talisman · Flask-Mail

Underlying model: Haugg F, Lee G, He J, Nürnberg L, Bontempi D, Bitterman DS, Catalano P, Prudente V, Glubokov D, Warrington A, et al. Foundation Artificial Intelligence Models for Health Recognition Using Face Photographs (FAHR-Face). arXiv:2506.14909.

FAHR-Face is a foundation model trained on >40 million facial images and fine-tuned for two tasks: biological age estimation (FAHR-FaceAge) and survival risk prediction (FAHR-FaceSurvival). FAHR-FaceAge achieved a mean absolute error of 5.1 years on public datasets and outperformed benchmark models across the full human lifespan. FAHR-FaceSurvival demonstrated robust mortality prediction, with the highest-risk quartile showing more than triple the mortality of the lowest (adjusted HR 3.22; P<0.001). The combination of both models improved prognostic accuracy.
I am very fond of Margaret Atwood’s poetry. In fact, one of my favorite poems is February. And I am always delighted to see it as Poem of the Day from The Poetry Foundation on the first day of February each year. So, I was very excited to read her prose for the first time and was not disappointed.

A critical balance, and one that surprised me. Offred, and all the other Handmaids’ situation warrants anger, and spite,. It is what one would more or less expect if you had had your life ripped away from you

Strength 2

What Could Have Been Better

Point 1

As far as ambiguous endings go, this was very well done. The imagery in the final scence as she is lifted (christ-like, angel-like? My knowledge of religious symbolism is lacking) into the van – left me feeling rather optimistic. I am not sure why, this could be because I had seen the first season of the show way back, and was aware Offred’s story continued.

Also, the fact it was not quite overnight. I think the show expands quite a bit on the lore of the fall of the U.S. and the rise of Gilead.

Memorable Passages

“Whether this is my end or a new beginning I have no way of knowing: I have given myself over into the hands of strangers, because it can’t be helped. And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light.“

“That is what you have to do before you kill, I thought. You have to create an it, where none was before. You do that first, in your head, and then you make it real. So that’s how they do it, I thought. I seemed never to have known that before.”

“and what the picture is in reality is this spirit, that’s what a picture really is, neither matter nor soul but both parts at the same time and together they make up what I think of as spirit, and maybe that’s why my good paintings, yes, all good paintings, have something to do with what I, what Christians, call The Holy Spirit, because all good art has this spirit, good pictures, good poems, good music, and what makes it good is not the material, not matter, and it’s not the content, the idea, the thought, no, what makes it good is just this unity of matter and form and soul that becomes spirit, that’s what culture is, probably, he says, it’s probably just one person being like another person that creates a culture, for example wearing a suit and tie, while what art is, yes, art is everyone just being like themselves, and totally themselves”

Genre: Literary Fiction
Length: 824 pages (complete trilogy)

First Impressions

I’m left with no words. However, I am filled with emotion and a sense of spiritual fulfillment. I think the best way to describe this book is to not describe it at all. Merve Emre has already said it best in Book Forum, “to describe what Septology is about—or even to claim that it is about something that can be fixed in words—is already to defile it.”

The Writing Style

This is by far the most unique prose I have ever read. The entire trilogy is written in a single, unbroken sentence. This sentence is the seemingly endless stream of consciousness of the protagonist, Asle, in the days leading up to Christmas. There are times where I felt like I was swept away by that stream, and entered a trance-like state. Feeling Asle’s feelings and thinking his thoughts. I felt the delineation between myself and Asle melt away.

Key Themes

Spirituality

Art

Culture

What Worked Well

Strength 1

I thought the writing style was one of the greatest strengths of the trilogy. Though I underestand that it may not be for everyone. You either get it or you don’t - and if you do, it is an incredible experience.

Strength 2

It did not feel preachy, like many other books that attempt to discuss spirituality. It approached the subject with a sense of humility and a genuine curiosity about the intersection of faith, art, and culture - and how individuals experience this intersection, and how they can channel this convergence into their own lives.

What Could Have Been Better

Point 1

For one, it is incredibly difficult reading each of the three books in the trilogy consecutively. I found it necessary to take breaks between books to digest what I had read.

Memorable Passages

“how it has to be, it must have a meaning, yes, Our Lord must have given it meaning, they think, he writes straight on crooked lines, they think, or anyway the good Lord is part of it all somehow, and it’s the devil who made the lines crooked, they think and they hold onto their cigarettes and pints and then they pray a silent prayer, a prayer more like a look out over the sea inside them, wordless, but as far as the eye can reach over that sea the prayer extends, entirely wordless, because the words will be left behind, definitely, but there must be a port for people like them too, they’re probably thinking, and then they feel a prick of something like fear so they raise their pint and have a taste of beer, the good old taste, it gives them a sense of security, I”

“…there inside the person is what will pass away and become one with what is invisible in everything..”

Final Thoughts

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a unique and thought-provoking read. Religious or not, this book evokes a sense of spirituality in the reader that is both humbling and uplifting.
